Over the past 15 years or so the emissions from vehicles have had to meet ever lower limits. This limit is so low that a treatment system (SCR) is fitted to most new diesel vehicle exhausts. To enable this to work Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) has to be sprayed into the exhaust system. A reaction takes place which cleans up the majority of emissions.
