Environmentally Friendly Truck Stops

Almost any truck driver that drives across the country will tell you the same thing, and that is that the inside of their truck is both their office and also their sleeping quarters. Most drivers remain close to their trucks while they make their freight deliveries. Even when they stop for a break or to get some sleep, they normally leave the trucks diesel engine running so that they can power the air conditioner or heater and other appliances, such as a refrigerator. Federal regulations require that a driver must stop driving after 11 hours. Once he or she has driven for 11 hours, they must rest for 10 hours, before getting behind the wheel again. Idling diesel engines consume an average of 1 gallon of diesel fuel per hour, so a truck idling for that 10 hour rest period would consume 10 gallons of fuel. Besides using the diesel fuel, diesel engines emit carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, particulate matter, nitro oxides and volatile organic compounds.

With a team effort between some companies and truck stops, they came up with a way that truck drivers can rest comfortably in their trucks without having to idle their diesel engines. With the use of modern technology, a tractor-trailer can park at a truck stop for hours and even days and remain fully operational, while being environmentally friendly. Many truck stops that have transformed into an environmentally friendly truck stop provide truck drivers the option to plug into a service module. These technology advanced service modules mount in the window of the truck and provide filtered air that keeps the cab of the truck at a comfortable temperature. Using this service module, a truck driver also has access to a high speed internet computer with a touch screen interface with email. They also get access to satellite TV, electrical outlets and free local calls through the phone connection. While these Eco-friendly modules provide truck drivers with several great luxuries, they also are helping the environment. With trucks plugged into these units, there is no need to run the diesel engine, saving the air from all of the pollutants.

Truck drivers find that the services that environmentally friendly truck stops offer actually save them money. For a basic hookup at one of these truck stops may vary, but most are under $2.00 an hour. When you consider that a diesel engine uses a gallon of fuel an hour, the environmentally friendly basic hookup is less expensive to use per hour. Truck stops are operated 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. With dozens of diesel trucks parked at a time at a single truck stop, the impact that the environmentally friendly truck stops will have in this country will be astonishing. The environment will not be the only thing that benefits from this technology. Truck drivers will get a better sleep in a truck that is not idling because there will be no noises, vibrating or fumes.

Best Practices For Truck Repair And Increased Mileage

Truck repair is avoidable to an extent. If you regularly service and maintain your truck you can avoid truck repair and the associated tension and loss while enjoying the benefits of increased mileage. You are practically spending more than half of the time you are awake in the truck and it is with you passively helping you, making your livelihood. It's working doubly hard as you do, five days a week, all day, in stop-and-go traffic, in the heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc., It's high time you stop and pay it back or it's going to leave you stranded.

Truck repair is essentially a demanding expense in your business. As long as you have the owner's manual it is going to come handy telling you categorically when to take it for a service maintenance. In its absence how often should you change fluids, check brakes, etc.? Unfortunately, there is not a single answer. There are several variables to consider - the climatic condition your truck is subjected to, the fuel used, the age of your truck, etc., and of course its type.

Another crucial question is how often you are taking care of its service maintenance. Are you doing it yourself or having it done by a technician? Either way, you will have to be proactive in keeping a time log in terms of the service maintenance frequency.

Preventive Maintenance

The adage "prevention is better than cure" will apply squarely for your truck maintenance.

Best Practice Daily Checks

• Regardless of the age and type of the truck you are running, many of the basics are the same. Make it a habit to do a visual check of your truck. This is just to make sure it's clean and sparkling.

• Next, you should do a basic safety check by checking the lights (including hazards), tire condition and air pressure. It is crucial to check fluid levels daily, engine oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. Get your brake line inspected, spark plugs inspected and filters replaced regularly. These can warn you about bigger repair problems beforehand.

• Look underneath your high-mileage truck for signs of fluid leaks, they shouldn't be ignored. If left unattended to they can turn into expensive truck repair jobs.

• Listen for unusual sounds, such as thumps, bangs or pings. These could be warning signs that your truck needs serious attention. Keeping track of any new noises and info on when they started may help your mechanic to diagnose the problem.

Best Practices for increased mileage

• Tire pressure is critical! It is a proven fact that you can improve your gas mileage by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. This will also ward off unexpected flats and blowouts.

• Performing regular tune-ups on you truck will keep your truck's engine running at top speed.

• Stick to a certain mechanic who knows the history of your truck.

• Another most important system to the "health" of your engine is the lubrication system; clean oil in your truck is like healthy blood in a human body so change it every three months.

Therefore, it is better to learn how to maintain your high-mileage truck to keep repair bills at a minimum and enjoy increased mileage. The concept is quite simple - maintain the truck before it becomes too late and breaks down. Remember, a stitch in time saves nine. Regular truck maintenance multiplies profits and reduces truck repair instances.

Collision Mitigation Systems

Many commercial trucks are beginning to use collision mitigation systems to help avoid front end collisions while driving. These systems use forward looking radar to detect distance and speed of vehicles that are in the front of the truck. These systems are also equipped with collision warning and adapt to cruise control and braking systems.

When the collision mitigation system is installed in a commercial truck, it will interface with the cruise control, in an effort to stop acceleration, as well as, the braking system when a front end collision hazard has been detected. The radar sensor is mounted on the front bumper of the vehicle. It has the ability to transmit and receive high frequency radio signals to determine the distance of the vehicle or object that is in front of the truck.

The collision detection unit in the collision mitigation system will alert the driver with an audible and visual warning. The radar on these systems can be adjusted to the needs of the driver and many of these systems can look forward as far as 500 feet.

When the system is detects that an unsafe distance, according to the predetermined settings, it will alert the driver in an attempt to have the vehicle manually slowed to create safe following distance. When an imminent collision is detected the system has the capability to shut down the cruise control as well as apply the brakes to attempt to avoid collision. These types of technological advances are expected to increase in the future of the trucking industries.

Commercial Truck Weight Restrictions

To preserve the integrity of state and national highways built with taxpayer dollars, both the federal government and state governments have their own commercial vehicle weight restrictions. National standards apply on interstate highways, while individual state standards apply on all other roads. Compliance with weight standards is checked at weigh stations, often near state lines.

National Truck Weight Standards

Federal weight limit maximums for interstate highways include:

Single axle: 20,000 lbs
Tandem axle: 40,000 lbs
Total vehicle weight: 80,000 lbs

If particular cargo causes a truck to exceed the federal weight standard, the company must apply for a temporary overweight permit before the trip commences. These permits are only available under the following circumstances:

The cargo load is non-divisible, or cannot be divided into smaller shipments that comply with the maximum weight restriction.

There is no other way to move the cargo; shipping by truck is the only option.
The truck complies with the laws and regulations of each individual state through which the cargo will pass.

Overweight trucks may require an escort vehicle or may be required to follow a restricted route.

Truck Weight by State

The Department of Transportation or Department of Motor Vehicles of individual states monitor their own commercial freight weigh stations. Therefore, different states may have very different cargo weight restrictions from each other. For this reason, trucking companies must ensure that their cargo load will comply with the restrictions of each state through which their trucks will pass on any given trip. Every state will provide a permit for non-divisible overweight loads, and individual states may tolerate certain overweight loads.

Why Commercial Truck Insurance Is Important

Commercial trucks are used to carry a heavy load and deliver it to the given destination. So if you have a commercial truck business you need to make sure that all the vehicles you own are insured. Trucks are huge and heavy vehicles that are very expensive. So in case they get damage, paying for the repairs from your wallet will not be affordable. If the truck is insured then you can apply for a claim and all your expenses will be taken care of. Sometimes the moment you purchase the vehicle you will be provided with a policy, but if you don't get one then it is your duty to get is done yourself. This will also help you improve your relationship with your employees. This policy will also cover the injuries of the driver. But you need to make sure that you choose the right agency, because only then you will be able to get the required coverage.

The vehicles you own should be an asset for you, but without insurance it is most likely that they will get converted into a liability. Once you have found the right agency you will have nothing o worry about. But if you are looking for one then you should shop around a bit to get what you desire. First of all you need to decide what kind of load your trucks will be carrying. Because this will help you decide what you need to put into your policy. If your commercial truck is insured then, the cargo and the driver also get insured automatically. This way you will be able to rest without worrying about anything. Having a policy in hand really helps when the time comes. This is why it has been made mandatory by law for all the commercial trucks to be insured. So you actually have no choice.

Before the agent actually prepares a policy he or she will take a lot of things into consideration. These things include the age of the driver, his driving experience, the goods being transported, etc. he will draw a policy that will be beneficial to both, you and the agency. But before you sign the fine print you need to make sure that you read the fine print thoroughly and see if everything that you require is mentioned. Once you acquire commercial truck insurance, you will be able to run your business more efficiently.
