This patent pending innovation works to compensate for casing construction and expandable rim variability. Prior to tread building, the Builder Balance Improvement device locates the sector of the tire with the least amount of undertread. The tread and cushion joints are then positioned in this sector. The tread and cushion joints are heavier, and when positioned at the low point, radial runout is improved and less balance weight is needed when the tire is mounted on the vehicle. This indexing of the tread and cushion joints helps to ensure a better, smoother ride with less irregular wear. The Builder Balance Improvement device is proprietary to the MRT process.

The MRT cushion application system extrudes hot cushion gum, which automatically fills skives and buzzouts up to 25 mm wide and 5 mm deep while applying an ideal bonding layer. Truck Tonnage Posts Largest Annual Gain in 13 Years

Truck tonnage rose 5.9% last year over 2010, its biggest annual gain in 13 years, American Trucking Associations said Tuesday.

Tonnage jumped 10.5% in December from a year earlier, ATA said in its monthly seasonally adjusted for-hire truck tonnage report.

On a month-to-month basis, December tonnage was 6.8% higher than November, following a 0.3% monthly gain.

November’s year-over-year gain was revised up slightly, to 6.1% from an originally reported 6% increase.

The seasonally adjusted index for December came in at a reading of 124.5, up from 116.6 in November. ATA uses the year 2000 as a baseline.

The not seasonally adjusted index, which measures actual tonnage, rose 0.8% to a 116.4 reading.
“While I’m not surprised that tonnage increased in December, I am surprised at the magnitude of the gain,” ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said, noting that it was the largest month-to-month increase since January 2005.

The new product employs Grote’s LightForm, the world’s lowest profile LED lighting technology, to enhance vehicle safety.

Until now, transit vehicle manufacturers and transit authorities have had few options for exit demarcation. Standard reflective and glow-in-the-dark tapes used for outlining doors and emergency exits, are easy to install, but are less than stellar in their ability to attract the attention of passengers in emergency situations.

Grote’s new LightForm Emergency Egress Lighting Film provides all of the advantages of adhesive exit markers with the added benefit of being powered. The film provides the kind of bright illumination that can help lead disoriented passengers to safety, even in dark or hazy conditions.

“LightForm Emergency Egress Lighting Film is easy to install, and unlike traditional lighting fixtures, requires no lens or bezel,” said Steve Green, business development manager for LightForm. “The highly advanced, thin-film, solid-state lighting device easily resists water and concussion and will function properly even after significant trauma. The product is so robust that it will continue to operate even after sustaining significant damage.”

Because it’s a film, Grote’s new lighting product can conform to the shape and contours of virtually any door or exit and its aggressive adhesive backing allows it to adhere to nearly any surface material. LED brightness is consistent throughout the length of the product and multiple modules can be daisy-chained together, minimizing wiring and harness routing issues. The lamps don’t extend into the passenger space, so they pose no hang-up risk or obstacle to egress, and they come in a variety of traditional colors including red, blue, green, amber and Grote LED WhiteLight.

“In an accident, a traditional lamp could dislodge or fragment, becoming a source of injury,” Green said. “Because LightForm Emergency Egress Lighting Film is paper thin and super lightweight, it can’t shatter, significantly lowering the potential for this egress lamp to cause injury.”

LightForm Emergency Egress Lighting Film comes standard in a 12-Volt version. Custom voltages and a 24-Volt product version are also available. The product has been rigorously tested and meets the military performance standard 810G for temperature, rainfall, corrosion, sand/dust, submersion temperature, vibration and shock. It also meets military performance standards 461 and 464 for electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Trucking Adds 3,100 Jobs; Unemployment Rate Declines to 9%

The unemployment rate declined to a six-month low of 9% in October while the economy added 80,000 jobs, including 3,100 trucking jobs, the Labor Department said Friday.

Total transportation and warehousing sector employment rose by 9,400 workers, Labor figures showed.
Economists had projected the unemployment rate would remain at 9.1%, Bloomberg reported. The number of jobs gained was below economists’ forecasts of 95,000, Bloomberg said.

The payrolls gain followed a revised 158,000 increase in September that was higher than originally reported.

The payroll and unemployment figures are obtained by separate surveys, with payrolls from a survey of employers and the unemployment rate from a survey of households.
Factory employment rose by 5,000, the first increase in three months, while service employment climbed by 90,000 jobs.

Private hiring rose by 104,000 jobs after a revised gain of 191,000 the previous month. Government payrolls decreased by 24,000.

Continuing in its efforts to provide the industry's most comprehensive, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly air management energy system, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC has developed three optimized components: the Bendix® PBS® Air Injection Engine Booster, Bendix® Turbo-Clutch Air Compressor, and Bendix® Electronic Air Control Dryer (EAC). The Bendix PBS engine booster is unlike any other product available on the market today. The PBS system is placed near the air intake manifold on an engine and monitors the Controller Area Network (CAN) for specific signals. Once the conditions for activation are met, the system injects compressed air from an auxiliary air tank into the engine manifold, delivering the desired amount of air that the diesel combustion processes require. Typically, when a driver presses down on the throttle to demand acceleration, there is a delay in engine response because of turbo lag. This lag constitutes the time difference between acceleration demand and the maximum air delivery of the turbocharger. The Bendix PBS system overcomes turbo lag by instantaneously injecting the desired air into the intake manifold, allowing the turbocharger to spin up to its full capacity and take over the air delivery demands. The pneumatically operated, single-cylinder Bendix Turbo-Clutch Air Compressor works together with PBS air injection and the Bendix Electronic Air Control Dryer, so that the compressor disengages during the portion of the duty cycle when no air is demanded. This greatly reduces power consumption from the engine and reduces fuel consumption. As a result of the reduced overall cycling, the life cycle of the compressor significantly increases and normal wear and tear is dramatically reduced. Vehicles can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3 percent when operating with the Bendix PBS system, up to another 3 percent with the Bendix Turbo-Clutch Air Compressor, and 1 percent more with the Bendix Electronic Air Control Dryer. Commercial Fleets Will Power Natural Gas Vehicle Market through 2016

There are currently about 12.6 million natural gas vehicles (NGVs) in use worldwide, and sales of NGVs vary widely from region to region and country to country. The majority of NGVs are located in Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, particularly in countries like Pakistan and Iran that lack extensive gasoline refining capacity. In North America, due largely to a lack of convenient refueling stations, demand for NGVs is largely relegated to the fleet market. Worldwide sales of natural gas vehicles are expected to grow rapidly over the next five years, to 3.2 million units annually by 2016 from 1.9 million in 2010, according to a recent report from Pike Research. The consumer market will continue to lag growth in commercial fleets, however: three-quarters of the new growth between 2010 and 2016 will come in corporate and government sales.

As a portion of the worldwide total, the percentage of commercial NGVs will rise from 59% to 65% in that period, according to senior analyst Dave Hurst.

“Many manufacturers and industry observers are looking forward to the time when consumer NGVs become the next big thing,” says Hurst. “But the number of refueling stations remains too low for the consumer market to really take off in many parts of the developed world.”

One solution to the current inadequacies in NGV infrastructure is the spread of bi-fuel vehicles. Popular in Latin America, where almost 90% of NGVs have bi-fuel engines, these vehicles can run on either gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG).

India, which has one of the largest fleets of CNG buses in the world, is expected to overtake Iran for the lead in NGV sales by 2014. By 2016 there will be 612,000 NGVs in India, according to Pike Research’s analysis. The strongest growth, however, will occur in the United States, where a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.4% will result in nearly 33,000 vehicles sold in 2016.

As the global economy begins tentative steps toward recovery, truck manufacturers are looking to technologies that can help mitigate the rising cost of diesel fuel while meeting increasingly strict emissions requirements. Trucks that utilize electricity to meet these goals come in four variations: hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and plug-in electric power take-off (EPTO) to operate equipment onboard without using fuel. As the technology costs fall and diesel prices increase, the value proposition for hybrid trucks is strong, and a new report from Pike Research forecasts that sales will surpass 100,000 vehicles annually by 2017.

“The truck market has experienced seismic changes in the last few years,” says senior analyst Dave Hurst. “The global recession has taken a huge toll on medium duty and heavy duty truck sales in many regions. As fuel prices have increased, truck manufacturers have responded by expanding their offerings of alternative drivetrains to help reduce emissions and fuel usage by trucks.”

However, Hurst adds that the primary challenge facing the hybrid truck market remains the cost of the system. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) all continue to have higher upfront costs that are significant enough to result in higher total cost of ownership for the vehicles. While the typical operating cost of a diesel vehicle is significantly higher than that of other drivetrains ($0.72/mile for diesel versus $0.60/mile for hybrid and $0.22/mile for BEV trucks), Pike Research’s analysis indicates that the higher purchase cost and low cost of diesel in some markets means that the trucks are not able to recover the incremental costs for the electric drive system in their lifetime. As a result, government incentives and emissions or fuel economy regulations will continue to play a very important role in promoting hybrids and plug-in trucks.

Pike Research’s analysis further indicates that most HEV, PHEV, and BEV trucks will utilize different chemistries of lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries. The cleantech market intelligence firm expects that the use of nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries will peak in 2016, as vehicle manufacturers move their remaining systems toward Li-ion. The Li-ion market is expected to reach 3.6 million kilowatt hours (kWh) globally in the medium and heavy duty truck market by 2017.

This video compares the performance of a commercial vehicle on an incline with a weighted trailer equipped with the Bendix® PBS® engine air injection system versus a non-PBS-equipped commercial vehicle. The Bendix PBS engine air injection system is the first air management system of its kind to simultaneously improve fuel economy and vehicle acceleration, while reducing engine emissions. We are DOT Certified and all BIT inspections are performed utilizing DOT/BIT Inspectors. A&T "Mobile" Truck Road Service meets all requirements under Title 49 of the DOT Inspectors Guide.
